Butt lift and anti cellulite woman body concept

You want a rounder, firmer backside, but no amount of squats or lunges are adding the volume you want. Now, you’re ready to take the next step and schedule a consultation for a Brazilian butt lift. While you’ve done your research, there may be some questions or concerns you may feel silly or embarrassed to ask. First, you should never feel silly for asking your doctor a question (that’s what we’re here for). Also, to help you get a bit more clarity and feel more comfortable, Dr. Ortiz, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Raleigh, is sharing the answers to five questions you’re afraid to ask about a Brazilian butt lift.

Can I Sit Down After a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Brazilian butt lift is a fat transfer procedure

You’ll want to avoid putting direct pressure on your buttocks for at least two weeks in order to keep blood flowing through the area and to avoid damaging the newly placed fat cells. Standing, lying on your side or your stomach, or sitting with the assistance of a BBL cushion are the best options to avoid pain and discomfort as well as negatively affecting your results.

Will My Butt Feel and Look Natural?

A Brazilian butt lift is a fat transfer procedure, meaning fat cells from one area of your body, such as your waist, thighs, or hips, are removed via liposuction and injected into the buttocks. This increases volume in the area without the use of an implant, and the end result is much more natural.

It’s important to note that during the first few months after the surgery, some patients report the area feels tighter and more firm than they expected. This is perfectly normal and subsides after a few months to its final result.

Can I Wear Jeans and “Normal” Clothes?

Dr. Ortiz recommends wearing loose, comfortable clothing during the healing process. For the first six weeks after the procedure, you’ll need to wear compression garments to encourage healing and improve your results, so jeans, leggings, or snug-fitting pants may be uncomfortable. Also, these items may actually damage the recently transferred fat cells and prevent them from growing properly within the buttocks, thus negatively affecting your results.

Dr. Ortiz will give you a more specific timeline during your consultation, but typically, you’ll want to choose looser items for around eight weeks after your BBL.

Will There Be Scarring?

The procedure requires removing fat from one area of the body via liposuction and transferring it to the buttocks. The incision scars from liposuction tend to be minimal or even invisible due to the tiny incisions required. As the fat is injected into the buttock, Dr. Ortiz will strive to minimize scarring as much as possible by placing incisions in the creases or in less visible locations and by using small incisions.

However, visible scarring also depends on how your body heals and whether you are inclined to have raised areas or darkened areas of scar tissue. Most of our patients have minimal to invisible scarring, though.

How Will I Go to the Restroom After a BBL?

While sitting on your buttocks is not recommended, there are some occasions when it’s unavoidable — specifically going to the restroom. To ease discomfort, a rolled towel on the front of the seat to go under your thighs can help. Also, try to avoid extended periods of time in the restroom — an over-the-counter stool softener after the procedure may be helpful.
