Chin augmentation, or genioplasty, can add strength and shape to a weak chin or jawline, but may also reduce a prominent chin. Whether it involves using an implant to round out a weak chin or reshaping bones to reduce the size of a protruding chin, a chin augmentation brings the chin and jawline into proportion with the rest of the face. Genioplasty may also help reduce the appearance of a double chin caused by a small chin bone.
Chin augmentation can mean improving the appearance of a small chin and weak jawline or reducing the size of a prominent chin. During surgery to improve a small or weak chin, a small incision will be made underneath the chin or in the mouth where the bottom lip and gums meet. An implant, typically made of silicone, will then be inserted and secured to the jawbone. During a chin augmentation to reduce the size of a prominent chin, the jawbone may be reduced and moved before being secured into its new position. In both procedures, scarring underneath the chin is minimal and if the incision was made in the mouth, it will be completely invisible. The entire procedure will last from 1-3 hours, depending on your case. Many people choose to have a chin augmentation at the same time as rhinoplasty to fully balance out their facial proportions, although some find that by bringing their chin into proportion with their other facial features, rhinoplasty is no longer necessary. The results from a chin augmentation are permanent.
