If you are considering a breast augmentation, you likely know there are a few types of implants. The most common are silicone and saline, which we offer at our Raleigh plastic surgery center. What are the differences between these breast implants and which should you choose? At your consultation, Dr. Ortiz will discuss these types of implants in depth to help you determine which is right for you.
Silicone breast implants are the most natural-feeling option. They consist of a silicone shell filled with silicone gel. Silicone implants look and feel more like natural breast tissue and are the preferred material for many patients.
Silicone implants are approved by the FDA for patients 22 and older. This type of implant may require regular visits to your plastic surgeon for an ultrasound or MRI to make sure the implants are functioning properly.
Saline breast implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water (saline). The implants may be pre-filled or filled once the shell has been inserted into the body. This type of implant gives the patient uniform shape and firmness. Saline implants have been approved by the FDA for patients age 18 and older.
