If you’ve had a baby, you know how much pregnancy and breastfeeding can change your body. While it’s possible to lose the “baby weight” through diet and exercise, lifestyle changes can’t tighten loose skin or lift the breasts. The mommy makeover is a popular cosmetic procedure that improves the appearance of areas most affected by childbearing, such as loose skin, stretch marks, sagging breasts, and more. With a mommy makeover in Raleigh, North Carolina, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Juan A. Ortiz can help you get your pre-baby body back.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a cosmetic surgery combining multiple surgical procedures as a way to rejuvenate the areas most impacted by pregnancy: the breasts and abdomen. The surgery is made up of a breast procedure combined with an abdominal procedure but can be customized by adding additional cosmetic procedures for a more comprehensive, full body makeover.

What Cosmetic Surgeries Are Included in a Mommy Makeover?

During pregnancy, the muscles of the abdomen, as well as your skin and tissues stretch to accommodate the growing baby. While diet and exercise can help you lose extra weight after childbirth, these layers of skin and tissue may not bounce back. This is why an increasing number of women are choosing to have a mommy makeover when they are done having children.

The term “mommy makeover” actually refers to a combination of procedures performed as a single stage procedure. Mommy makeovers may involve breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction, tummy tuck, BBL surgery, and/or labiaplasty.

The procedures included in your mommy makeover are extremely customizable and depend on your body and your goals. During your consultation with Dr. Ortiz, it’s important to discuss all the areas you’d like to improve so they can create a surgical plan for you.

“North Raleigh Plastic Surgery is AMAZING. My results have changed my life. The process from start to finish was very easy and simple. Dr. Ortiz is friendly, knowledgable, and truly cares for his patients. The head nurse at North Raleigh Plastic Surgery, Lauren, is absolutely incredible. She was friendly and inviting from the first time I met her. She went above and beyond to make me comfortable, answer my questions, calm my nerves, and make me feel like her number 1 priority. I cannot recommend North Raleigh Plastic Surgery enough! I will definitely be going there for more work.”Lauren D.

Ideal Candidates for a Mommy Makeover Procedure

Ideal candidates for a mommy makeover are in good health, at a healthy weight, and are not planning on becoming pregnant in the future. Despite the name, the procedure is not just for moms. Many Raleigh women choose a mommy makeover even if they have never had children. The treatment is designed for anyone who wants to address multiple areas of concern during a single, comprehensive surgery.

If you have any questions or concerns about whether a mommy makeover is right for you, Dr. Ortiz will be happy to answer them at your consultation.

Assessment and Consultation for a Mommy Makeover

During your consultation with a Raleigh plastic surgeon, he or she will discuss your goals, the nature of the mommy makeover, cost, and what you can expect in regards to recovery, complications, and scars. Additionally, you will be shown results from previous patients so you can visualize your results following these body contouring procedures.

What Can Be Included in a Mommy Makeover?

The procedure includes a combination of cosmetic surgical procedures designed to address the physical changes that many women experience after pregnancy and childbirth. The specific techniques used for a mommy makeover can vary depending on an individual’s unique needs and goals, but the most common procedures included in a mommy makeover typically involve the breast and abdominal areas.

Here are the surgical techniques commonly used for a mommy makeover:

Breast Augmentation (with or without Breast Lift)

Breast Augmentation (with or without Breast Lift): Breast augmentationinvolves the placement of breast implants to enhance breast size and shape. It is commonly performed to restore lost breast volume after pregnancy and breastfeeding. In some cases, a breast lift (mastopexy) may be combined with breast augmentation to lift and reshape sagging breasts.

Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction: Some women experience overly large breasts (macromastia) after childbirth. Breast reductionsurgery is an option to reduce breast size, alleviate discomfort, and create a more proportionate and comfortable breast shape.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

A tummy tuckis a key component of many mommy makeovers. It involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and the tightening of abdominal muscles that may have become separated or weakened during pregnancy. This procedure results in a firmer, flatter abdominal contour.

Liposuction

Liposuctionis often used in combination with a tummy tuck to further refine the abdominal area or to address localized fat deposits in other areas of the body, such as the thighs, hips, or flanks.

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)

A Brazilian Butt Lift involves liposuction to harvest fat from donor areas and then transferring this fat to the buttocks to enhance their size and shape. It can be added to a mommy makeover to achieve a more balanced and youthful body contour.

Labiaplasty

Labiaplastyis a surgical procedure that may be included in a mommy makeover to reduce the size or reshape the labia minora, addressing concerns related to childbirth-related changes or discomfort.

Mommy Makeover Recovery

Plan to take at least 2 weeks off from work and avoid strenuous activity and exercise for 6 weeks. Recovery time varies based on your customized combination of procedures.

After your mommy makeover, you will need someone with you for the full 24 hours following the procedure. You will be recovering from anesthesia during this time, and it is important that someone drives you home and stays with you.

You will be on narcotic pain medication and unable to drive for at least one week following surgery. Plan to sleep on your back or side, with your upper body and feet elevated. (Many patients choose to sleep in a recliner during recovery).

You will have a minimum of 3 appointments with Dr. Ortiz after your mommy makeover: one appointment a week after the surgery, one appointment at 2 months post-surgery, and the final appointment at 6 months after surgery.

Expected Results for Mommy Makeover Surgery

After your mommy makeover, your breasts and abdomen will be more youthful and look more like they did before pregnancy. It is important to know that a mommy makeover tightens and firms the breasts and abdomen, but it is not a weight loss surgery.

As your body heals, you can enjoy results such as:

  • A flatter stomach from tightened muscles and excess skin removal
  • More defined contours through targeted fat removal and sculpting
  • Improved breast symmetry and shape for a more balanced, youthful look
  • A confidence boost that comes from feeling more comfortable with your body

Together, these changes are designed to help you feel more at ease in your body and confident in your appearance as you move forward.

Dr. Ortiz will review your customized plan and provide detailed pricing during your consultation.
