Getting great tummy tuck results depends on choosing the right surgeon, being close to a stable goal weight, and following recovery instructions carefully before and after surgery. Patients who prepare well and heal properly are more likely to enjoy a smoother abdominal contour and long-lasting results.

Below, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Juan Ortiz shares several important ways to help protect your tummy tuck results and support a smoother recovery.

#1. Achieve Your Goal Weight Before Tummy Tuck Surgery

Reaching a stable weight (usually within 10 to 15 pounds of your goal) can help improve both your tummy tuck results and your long-term satisfaction. Significant weight loss after a tummy tuck, including from pregnancy, can lead to new loose skin and may affect the smoother contour created by surgery.

#2. Don’t Use Nicotine or Alcohol

Using nicotine, including cigarettes, vaping, or even nicotine gum or the patch, prevents oxygenated blood from properly reaching certain areas, which can prevent proper healing. It’s important to stop using nicotine for at least 6 weeks before and after the procedure to reduce the risk of complications.

Alcohol restrictions are often less strict, but it is still important to avoid drinking right before surgery and during early recovery because it can thin the blood, slow healing, and interfere with pain medication.

#3. Add Movement After a Tummy Tuck

Light movement after a tummy tuck can support healing by improving circulation and helping reduce the risk of blood clots. While rest is still important, short walks around your home are usually encouraged early in recovery.

#4. Avoid Lifting or Strenuous Activities

Avoiding lifting and strenuous activity after a tummy tuck is important because too much strain can interfere with healing and affect your results. During early recovery, patients are usually asked to avoid heavy lifting (anything over 5 pounds), intense exercise, and other activities that put pressure on the abdomen.

This may include lifting children, doing household chores, standing for long periods, or returning to exercise too quickly. Dr. Ortiz will give you personalized postoperative restrictions based on your procedure and healing progress.

#5. Select a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon for Your Tummy Tuck

The most important thing you can do to ensure you get excellent results from your tummy tuck is to choose an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. Surgeon training, judgment, and technique all play a major role in both your final outcome and your recovery experience.

Take time to review credentials, patient reviews, and before-and-after photos, and come prepared with questions during your consultation. A qualified plastic surgeon should be willing to discuss their experience and help you understand what results may be realistic for your anatomy and goals.

Tummy Tuck FAQ

How long should I wait before exercising after a tummy tuck?

Light walking is often encouraged early in recovery, but more strenuous exercise usually needs to wait until your surgeon says it is safe. Your timeline will depend on your healing and the extent of your procedure.

Can weight gain affect tummy tuck results?

Yes. Weight gain after a tummy tuck can stretch the skin and affect your contour, which is why maintaining a stable weight helps support longer-lasting results.

Do compression garments help tummy tuck results?

Yes. Compression garments can help support healing, reduce swelling, and protect the treated area during recovery when worn as directed.
