Frequently Asked Questions About Renuvion

Renuvion FAQ’s

For decades scientists have been working to develop a minimally-invasive way to restore youthfulness to the skin and reduce signs of aging. Plastic surgery patients who do not want to undergo a traditional facelift or body lift now have a solution- Renuvion skin tightening.

Short of discovering the “fountain of youth,” Renuvion is the best minimally invasive, modern-day solution to eliminating wrinkles, fine lines, under-eye bags, sagging skin, and other signs of aging from the face and body. Our Raleigh board-certified plastic surgeon has answers to the frequently asked questions about Renuvion so that you can make the most informed decision on whether Renuvion is right for you.

What is Renuvion Technology?

Renuvion is a medical procedure that combines helium plasma and radiofrequency (RF) energy to stimulate and contract tissue beneath the surface of the skin. Helium plasma and RF energy are inserted beneath the skin’s surface using a slim, hand-held wand (much like a cannula used for liposuction) to provide the simultaneous and even application of controlled heat to the tissue.

How Does Renuvion Tighten Skin?

After local anesthesia is administered, your plastic surgeon inserts a slender wand into the small incisions of the treatment area. The controlled plasma energy is then applied directly beneath the surface of the skin, heating up to 85 degrees and immediately tightening the skin while stimulating tissue for the continued production of collagen. Within moments of the tissue being heated, the remaining helium gas jet cools the tissue, preventing the tissue from burning.

Was Renuvion Previously Called JPlasma?

Yes! Prior to its current Renuvion moniker, Renuvion cosmetic technology was known as J-Plasma or J-Plasty. It remains the same technology under its new name.

What Concerns Does Renuvion Address?

Renuvion is used to firm the skin of the face or body to achieve the results of a tighter, younger-looking figure and face. It accomplishes this through a minimally-invasive approach where small incisions allow for the insertion of the slender wand that delivers the helium plasma and RF energy to heat and tighten tissue.  Women and men looking for a surgical procedure that tightens their skin without undergoing a traditional facelift procedure will find Renuvion to be an effective alternative.

Where on the Body Can a Renuvion Procedure be Done?

Renuvion can be done on both the face and the body. Common location choices for a Renuvion skin tightening procedure are:

  • The lower face and neck
  • The upper face, such as the under-eyes, eyebrows, and forehead areas
  • Arms
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Buttocks
  • Abdomen

How is Renuvion Different from a Traditional Facelift and Bodylift?

Renuvion and traditional facelifts and bodylifts share a goal: to increase the tightness of the skin and restore a youthful appearance. While each of these procedures is successful at reaching its goal, they do so in different ways.

Renuvion is a minimally invasive procedure that combines the use of small incisions and controlled energy to treat an area of the face or body. In contrast, a facelift and bodylift use larger incision areas near the ear and hairline to lift and recontour the tissue underneath the skin, remove excess fat and extra skin, and then tightly pull the remaining skin to cover the newly formed contours. The treatment area(s) are then closed with sutures.

The results of each of these procedures are similar in treating wrinkles, and loose skin, and creating a smoother, dramatic change in the plump quality of youthfulness to the skin. However, the techniques, tools, and recovery timeline are vastly different.

Who is a Good Candidate for Renuvion?

Women and men who experience signs of mild skin sagging on the face or body, and want to achieve a look that tightens the skin make up most Renuvion patients. Individuals who prefer not to undergo a traditional facelift or bodylift procedure may opt for Renuvion instead, achieving great results with minimally-invasive surgery with a shorter recovery time.

How Can I Prepare for My Renuvion Procedure?

To prepare for your Renuvion skin tightening procedure, there is not much to be done; however, there are a few things you should avoid doing.

Avoid the following prior to your Renuvion appointment:

  • Blood thinning medication like Aspirin and Ibuprofen for a week prior.
  • Anti-aging or topical products for 3 days prior.
  • Alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior.

What Should I Expect on the Day of My Renuvion Procedure?

At the start of your Renuvion procedure your board-certified plastic surgeon will insert the long tumescent wand into the treatment area to administer local anesthesia and numb your skin and surrounding tissue. The surgeon may draw lines on the treatment area to ensure symmetry if multiple areas are being treated at once.

With the treatment area numbed, the helium plasma and RF energy are inserted with a slim wand to reach the tissue directly beneath the skin. This controlled energy immediately begins to contract the soft tissue, working its magic to rejuvenate, tighten, and shrink fatty, loose tissue.

Renuvion delivers immediate results, but as your tissue continues to produce collagen, you will see further results in the coming weeks and/or months.

How Long Does a Renuvion Procedure Take?

If you are having Renuvion with no other procedures combined, your Renuvion surgery can take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes to complete. If you are undergoing another surgical body procedure or facial procedure, the surgery can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours depending on the specific combination of work being done.

Can Renuvion be Done at the Same Time as Another procedure?

Yes! You can combine other procedures with Renuvion. Common procedures to combine with Renuvion are:

What Healing Process and Aftercare is Needed for Renuvion?

A: After your procedure, you can expect to feel mind discomfort and swelling up to a few weeks after your treatment. It may be recommended that you wear a compression garment for up to 72 hours after your Renuvion procedure. Patients should limit activities and remain home for the week after their treatment, returning back to work during their second week of recovery and back to normal activities after three weeks.

In order to get the most out of your Renuvion surgery, it’s recommended you do the following during your recovery period:

  • Stay hydrated.
  • Reduce salt intake.
  • Eat protein.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing.
  • Walk daily to keep your blood flowing.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activities like running, biking, lifting, and aerobic exercise.

Does Renuvion Leave Scarring?

The small incisions made during your Renuvion surgery may leave some slight scarring following the procedure. However, it is common for those small signs of scarring to fade and become undetectable within a few months after surgery.

How Long Before Seeing the Results of a Renuvion Procedure?

After completing your Renuvion treatment, you will see immediate signs of tightened skin. Since the tissue has been stimulated to produce collagen over time, the treatment area will continue to contract- resulting in further firming, smoothing, and rejuvenating of the skin.

Swelling will subside, showing more dramatic results within 4-6 weeks after the procedure, with full results being seen within 4-6 months after your Renuvion surgery.

Is Renuvion Safe?

As with any surgical procedure, there is always the risk of complications like bleeding, infection, changes to skin texture, or asymmetrical results. It’s important to find a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience working with Renuvion patients to discuss realistic expectations for results along with the potential for any side effects.

Q: How Much Does Renuvion Cost?

A: The price for Renuvion is between $2000-$5000 but can vary based on patient needs and the combination of other surgical procedures. During your initial consultation for Renuvion, Dr. Ortiz will discuss your individualized treatment plan, and we will present you with the costs of the procedure(s) and financing options.
